Meridian 59 was the first 3D Internet Role Playing Game,
launched in beta in 1995 and commercially in 1996. It is now run by two of the former developers.
For the first summer that my brother Andrew and I worked on it, however, it was 2D. Perhaps worse, we created the bitmaps ourselves--we're talking programmer art. Check out our creations below. My personal favorite is user.bmp... it started out as a stick figure, but somehow I screwed up the head and it became known as "snoopy head".
